A finales del mes de agosto de 2008, los espeleobuceadores británicos del Cave Diving Group, John Volanthen y Rupert Skorupka realizan una expedición en el sifón burgalés de Fuente Azul, donde avanzan hasta los 490 m / - 80 m.
Rupert Skorupka es uno de los pioneros en la exploración de esta cavidad, donde realizó inmersiones en los años 1999 y 2000, alcanzando la profundidad de 77 m en un desarrollo de 106 m.Rupert S. vuelve esta vez acompañado de su amigo John Volanthen. El 29 de agosto, en una inmersión de 7 horas y 20 minutos, John V. tendió 140 m de hilo guía buceando a una profundidad de entre 125 y 130 m, dejando la exploración a 490 m de distancia de la boca de entrada. En este punto la cavidad alcanza los - 80 m.

Con estos resultados el perfil de este sifón parece tener forma de “U”. La galería, después de alcanzar los -135 m mantiene la profundidad para, finalmente, ascender en tramos verticales y escalonados hasta llegar a los - 80 m. El conducto durante esta nueva exploración sigue con las mismas proporciones y continúa.

JV&RS pitched the habitat in the entrance shaft at -6m using an acro jammed accross the passage and installed a number of bottles at various depths for bailout. JV visited the bottom of the first shaft to look at the restriction (composed of clean gravel and stones) and dig it open a bit wider.

John Volanthen RS staged a spare rebreather for JV at -60m, JV scootered to the limit of exploration and tied on a fresh reel. Tee end of the line had lain on the floor unsupported for a year without being washed anywhere, indicating minimal flow. The cave continued in similar proprtions for 100m at a depth of between 130 and 125m. The passage then turned sharply upwards, rising as a series of staggered pots. JV began the deep stops required to ascend but tied off at -80m (490m from dive base) on the left wall leaving the cave stil ascending. A total of 140m of line was laid. After an uneventful return in poor visibiliy JV regained the 60m entrance shaft and used a lift bag to retrieve all the staged cylinders during the ascent. The habitat was not used as JV was warm and pretty comfortable. Total dive time 7hrs 20 mins.
